Firefox - A better way to browse the internet

June 28th, 2005

If you haven’t heard of Firefox, you should take a look and download it (it’s free).

Compared to Internet Explorer, Firefox is usually faster, has a similar interface, blocks popups, has tabs (just like excel), is arguably more secure, and supports plugins. Don’t go crazy with the plugins though, as some may cause memory leaks slowing the performance of your computer.

My favorite plugins include:

Forecastfox - puts the forecast in the task bar.
IE Tab - allows you to view the page in internet explorer with the click of a button.
FoxyTunes - enables control of your music player (itunes, windows media, etc.) from the taskbar
Scrapbook - allows you to easily save, view and edit saved web pages
Send to Phone - highlight text then send it to your mobile phone as a text message
Adblock - blocks advertisements on all sites. Note that you’ll also need the filterset add on to identify which links are ads.

Note that Firefox blocks the initial download from every site (to prevent software from being downloaded to your machine without your knowledge), so you’ll need to enable the download for each plugin you install.

Old versions of software

June 15th, 2005

OldVersion.com is a great resource that stores old versions of software. Their tagline is because newer is not always better. I’ve always been a fan of an older version of Winamp (PC) because it is faster and easier than the latest mp3 software. Older versions are also great if your operating system(Windows 98 or 2000) doesn’t support the latest software.
